Introduction
PROJECT EXPERIENCING HISTORY
Through a provocative method, students will participate in dynamics prioritising discovery, investigation, and observation, using material specially developed by Ivian professionals, including maps, worksheets, and illustrative figures. With the help of our educators and historical characters represented by professional actors, students will be guided back in time to the 19th century.
The activity takes place at historical points of the farm (coffee museum, main house, manual slave quarters, domestic slave quarters, chapel, and colony), where students will draw conclusions about the history of the location. The conclusion is made by one of our historians, who confronts the students' answers and complements them with important information and topics covered in the classroom.
THE PROJECT EXPERIENCING HISTORY WORKS ON THE FOLLOWING SKILLS:
Critical thinking – by interacting with characters and their conflicting stories.
Cultural repertoire – involves the foreign cultures of enslaved Africans and immigrants.
Communication – necessary for students to work in groups and seek the results of the activity.
Argumentation – by acquiring knowledge and questioning the opinions presented.
Empathy and cooperation – within the group, with the farm, with the characters, and with other groups.
Responsibility and citizenship – skills developed throughout the activity.
Locations: Fazenda Ibicaba, in Cordeirópolis, or Fazenda Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in Jundiaí.
Objectives - Aiming to enable the preservation and dissemination of the history of slavery, the coffee cycle, and European immigration, as well as to present schools with a teaching proposal through pedagogical tourism, where students can receive important information in History, Geography, Science, and Art in one location, experiencing the topics addressed, Ivian develops this educational project, combined with ecological and leisure activities, aimed at elementary and high school students.
Duration: half a day.
For a full day, the school must define two optional activities below:
From the Farm to the Cup - Through explanations and resources such as images, coffee seedlings, coffee samples, and the farm's own structure, our educators will show students, in an expository manner, all the stages of coffee, from planting to reaching the final consumer. Students will receive a coloured image that shows this entire cycle and will have the opportunity to plant a coffee seedling on the farm.
Playful activity on recycling - Through a large game, students will need to distribute recyclable materials, symbolised by images, into the appropriate containers, facing a great villain, “Mr Pollution,” and answering questions related to the environment. In a fun way, students will learn about the importance of our participation in the recycling process.
Water collection and analysis - Conducted by biologists from Ivian, this activity allows students to collect various information about the lake water on the farm, such as turbidity, acidity, colour, etc. The group will receive all the necessary material for the development of the activity as well as a worksheet to record the results obtained. The worksheets filled out by the students will be delivered to the school.
Art - Based on the works of Vick Muniz, who plays with the illusion of vision. The viewer, upon seeing the whole, identifies something familiar, but when analysing its content, approaching the image, perceives something else, that is, the material used which often results in a tangle of shapes and colours. Students, like the artist, will use various materials to create their works such as: coffee powder, sugar, dust, sand, pasta, chocolate, and everyday objects from an endless range. This activity can be developed in English!
Levels: Elementary 1, Elementary 2, and High School
