The State University of Campinas (Unicamp) is a public state higher education institution in Brazil, located in the city of Campinas, in the state of São Paulo, considered one of the best universities in the country and Latin America. It is one of the four universities maintained by the Government of the State of São Paulo, alongside the University of São Paulo (USP), the São Paulo State University (Unesp), and the Virtual University of the State of São Paulo (Univesp).

Unicamp was officially founded on October 5, 1966, the day its cornerstone was laid. Even in a recent university context, where the oldest Brazilian university is just over seven decades old, Unicamp can be considered a young institution that has already established a strong tradition in teaching, research, and relations with society.

On September 9, 1965, the State Education Council appointed the Organizing Committee of the University of Campinas to study and plan the gradual formation and installation of its Units, since only the Faculty of Medicine was in operation. The Committee was composed of Professors Zeferino Vaz (president), Paulo Gomes Romeo, and Antonio Augusto de Almeida. As a result of the Committee's work, the cornerstone of the University was laid on a 30-alqueire plot donated by João Adhemar de Almeida Prado on October 5, 1966. After the final report prepared by the Committee was approved and Professor Zeferino Vaz was appointed as Rector, the University entered its real installation phase.

The cornerstone of the University campus was laid on October 5, 1966, on a 30-alqueire plot donated by João Adhemar de Almeida Prado, 12 kilometers from the center of Campinas. The laying took place a month after Zeferino Vaz met with local businessmen to define the profile of the courses to be implemented. The State Education Council authorized the installation and operation of the Institutes of Biology, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, as well as the Colleges of Engineering, Food Technology, Sciences, and Nursing, and the Technical Schools. On December 22, Zeferino Vaz was appointed as rector.
