The City of Santos
Located on the São Paulo coast and 72 kilometers from the capital, Santos boasts the 6th place in the ranking of quality of life among Brazilian municipalities, according to the Human Development Index (HDI) assessed by the United Nations (UN) based on life expectancy, education, and GDP per capita.
- The activities linked to the Port - the largest in Latin America, with 13 kilometers in length and through which more than a quarter of all cargo entering and leaving Brazil passes, constitute the main source of wealth for the municipality, making Santos the most economically important city in the Metropolitan Region of Baixada Santista and one of the richest in the country.
-
The tourism, services, and fishing sectors in general complete the list of the largest activities in the Santos economy. On one hand, a thriving economy; on the other, its vocation for leisure. Santos' main attraction is its seven kilometers of beach, accompanied by the largest waterfront garden in the world - a title granted by the Guinness World Records.
On equal footing with the gardens and the beach, as the main tourist spots and postcards of the city, is the Historic Center, which gained a new attraction in 2024, the Valongo Park. Adjacent to the port complex, the center keeps alive in its narrow and charming cobblestone streets a glorious past with the commercialization of coffee, which once was the main Brazilian export product. The city has also stood out in business tourism and ecotourism, as almost its entire continental portion remains preserved, demonstrating a priority for environmental conservation.
Due to its various economic, infrastructural, and service characteristics, Santos was elected one of the best cities to live in after 60 years - ranking 3rd in 2023 - by the Urban Development Index for Longevity (IDL) - an initiative of the Mongeral Aegon Longevity Institute, and has maintained the title of Educator City since 2008, granted by the International Association of Educator Cities (Aice). Since 2015, the city has been part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
